1/23/2024 0 Comments Dia de los muertos 2021 oaxacaIn Oaxaca, you can feel the festive spirit in the air as soon as October begins. The two celebrations became one over time in Mexico, resulting in a mix of both, including the Nahua-inspired ritual of leaving food and supplies on the family altar and the medieval Spanish-inspired practice of using candles and flowers to illuminate the soul’s path home. The very celebration coincides with the Catholic All Saint’s Day and All Soul’s Day, a coincidence that is believed to have some connection with the timing of the arrival of the Spanish during the Aztec’s annual “feasts of the dead.” Today, Día de los Muertos is a blend of pre-hispanic and Catholic traditions. This journey could take years to complete, hence the Nahua death ritual of burying their loved ones with supplies, like food, water, and tools that might aid the deceased on their long journey ahead. In fact, it was believed that when the living died, they embarked on a journey of nine challenging levels through the land these gods reigned. Mictlantecuhtli in the Aztec tradition and Pitao Pezelao in the Zapotec tradition are the traditional gods of death and the underworld, the rulers of the Land of the Dead. The original seeds of what is today Día de los Muertos were planted several thousand years ago by the Aztec, Toltec, Zapotec, and other Nahua people.īy their beliefs, life could not exist without death, and the transition between the two was something to be celebrated, not mourned. They are welcomed and celebrated on November 1, All Saint’s Day in the Catholic calendar.īy 3pm that day, the angelitos bid farewell and the adult spirits follow the same marigold- and candle-scented path to their family’s awaiting altars (or ofrendas).Īt 3pm on November 2nd, All Soul’s Day, the spirits are said to depart once more back to their realm until the next Día de los Muertos celebration. The first spirits to arrive for a festive 24-hour visit with their families are those of the children who have passed, los angelitos. The core of the festivities usually takes place from midnight on October 31 when the gates of heaven are said to open through 3pm on November 2 when they close once again. Though the specific manner of celebrating can vary from state to state, and even from pueblo to pueblo, the true purpose of the day remains the same everywhere: to come together with family and friends to feast, laugh, reminisce, and welcome back loved ones from the great beyond. In this post, we’ll introduce you to the who, what, and why of Día de los Muertos in Mexico and the rituals of Oaxaca’s best Día de los Muertos celebrations, giving you an idea of what it’s like to partake in this centuries-old life-after-death Mexican tradition here in the epicenter of the Dia de los Muertos fiesta.ĭía de los Muertos is a joyful multi-day Mexican celebration of deceased loved ones that combines pre-hispanic death festivals with those of the Catholic tradition. You’ll witness the variety of ways the living guide their loved ones back from the land of the dead and how Mexicans view death, and therefore life. Whether you celebrate Día de los Muertos in the pueblos of San Agustín Etla, Santa Maria Atzompa, Teotitlan del Valle, or Oaxaca City itself, what you’ll experience is nothing short of a joyous reunion and absolutely sensory-full celebration. Save for Guelaguetza in July, Día de los Muertos in Oaxaca is also one of the most festive moments of the year, both in the city and in its surrounding pueblos. Though it’s a countrywide celebration, Oaxaca is the epicenter of Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos festivities. Visiting Oaxaca for Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos as it’s locally known, is a sensational experience. 1/23/2024 0 Comments Raw storyoThat's when Kevin Wallace from the attorney general's office objected to Bartov's comments that he said went beyond the scope of his expertise.ĪLSO READ: How Trump’s mouth is killing American exceptionalismīartov became enraged, assuming it meant he didn't know what he was talking about. “There is no provision in GAAP that says to the preparer, use this information to protect yourself. “The only criteria for financial statements is what works for the user,” Bartov says. “I would kick them out of my class immediately,” Bartov says.īishop said that it was part of the prosecution's case that the disclaimers on Trump's statements ensure accountants preparing the financial statements would be relieved of any kind of obligation that "they'd otherwise adhere to, for say, an audit," Bishop described “If a student walked into your class and suggested these statements were prepared for the benefit of, what would you ?” Suarez asks. “Because this opinion is a prediction of the future, and no one can predict the future.” “Estimated current value is an opinion about value,” Bartov says. “If you want to defraud someone, you don’t give this type of warning." provides another warning to the user that again they should not rely on the raw data that’s produced in this statement, but they should do their own analysis,” Bartov says. “The estimates presented herein are not necessarily predictive of the amounts that could be realized upon the disposition of the assets or the payments of the related liabilities,” one disclaimer says. Perhaps the first ever published book about advertising identifies many types of puffs. Two long testimonials tout the effectiveness of the treatment. We might speculate that the term blowhard in reference to a braggart is closely connected to the puff name for advertising, though the term came about a century later. So we might say ad claims were believed to be inflated, or puffed full of hot air. It quickly becomes clear that people saw advertising at that time frequently as less than admirable and even full of exaggerations. Yet, there are reasons promotion and advertising are connected to blowing wind.Īdvertisements were first called "puffs" in 1731, and in 1732 the term was explained: "Puff is become a cant Word to signify the Applause that Writers or Booksellers give to what they write or publish, in Order to increase its Reputation and Sale." 3 A "cant word," by the way, is a critical form of slang.Įchoing that description, with a bit of tongue-in-cheek, in 1735 a writer said puffs "are frequently exploded from the posteriors or back-side of a News-paper and in that they give the book-seller some ease under the pains occasioned by flatulent compositions, which are very apt to afflict him with the spleen, or a hypochondriacal and windy melancholy." 4 With that comment, the connection to that first definition seems clearer. That first definition might at first blush seem wholly unrelated to the others. : of, relating to, or designed for promotion or flattery 1/23/2024 0 Comments David stuart maya glyphsVainshtein, Knorozov was entirely devoting himself to science. He displayed a particular interest and aptitude for the study of ancient languages and writing systems, especially hieroglyphs, and he also read medieval Japanese and Arabic literature. He resumed his research into Egyptology, and also undertook comparative cultural studies in other fields such as Sinology. In the autumn of 1945 after World War II, Knorozov returned to Moscow State University to complete his undergraduate courses at the department of Ethnography. The Germans had packed them, and since they didn't have time to move them anywhere, the boxes were taken to Moscow."Īny possible system made by a man can be solved or cracked by a man. And the books that were in the library, were in boxes to be sent somewhere else. "Unfortunately it was a misunderstanding: I told about it to my colleague Michael Coe, but he didn't get it right. As he explained to the Mayanist epigrapher Harri Kettunen: Knorozov himself, in an interview conducted a year before his death, denied the Berlin legend. Knorozov is said to have taken this book back with him to Moscow at the end of the war, where its examination would form the basis for his later pioneering research into the Maya script.Īlthough many details of Knorozov's life during the war remained unclear, his student Galina Ershova could not find any evidence that he traveled outside of Moscow Oblast in 1943–1945. Somehow he managed to retrieve from the fire a book, which remarkably enough turned out to be a rare edition containing reproductions of the three Maya codices which were then known as the Dresden, Madrid, and Paris codices. Supposedly, when stationed in Berlin, Knorozov came across the National Library while it was ablaze. The legend has been much reproduced, particularly following the 1992 publication of Michael D. There, Knorozov is supposed to have by chance retrieved a book which would spark his later interest in and association with deciphering the Maya script. Īccording to a popular legend, Knorozov and his unit supported the push of the Red Army vanguard into Berlin. In 1944, he was unexpectedly recalled for a military service, but his father, who was a colonel in the Soviet Army, arranged for him a place of a telephone operator in an artillery unit stationed near Moscow. There he resumed his Egyptology studies, at the Moscow State University. In 1943, Knorozov survived an outbreak of typhus, and in September of that year managed to escape with his family to Moscow. Knorozov managed to avoid that by moving from village to village, where he earned his living as a school teacher. Due to his poor health, Knorozov was unfit for regular military service in the Soviet Army however, he and his family spent most of 1941–1943 years on the German-occupied territories, where he could be forced to join the German army support units. Knorozov's study plans were soon interrupted by the outbreak of World War II hostilities along the Eastern Front in mid-1941. There is now agreement that there are two species, each with two subspecies. Until recently, gorillas were considered to be a single species, with three subspecies: the western lowland gorilla, the eastern lowland gorilla and the mountain gorilla. Phylogeny of superfamily Hominoidea : Fig. Human gene sequences differ only 1.6% on average from the sequences of corresponding gorilla genes, but there is further difference in how many copies each gene has. The closest relatives of gorillas are the other two Homininae genera, chimpanzees and humans, all of them having diverged from a common ancestor about 7 million years ago. The species name was derived from Ancient Greek Γόριλλαι (gorillai) 'tribe of hairy women', as described by Hanno. They called it Troglodytes gorilla, using the then-current name of the chimpanzee genus. The American physician and missionary Thomas Staughton Savage and naturalist Jeffries Wyman first described the western gorilla in 1847 from specimens obtained in Liberia. Skins of gorillai women, brought back by Hanno, are reputed to have been kept at Carthage until Rome destroyed the city 350 years later at the end of the Punic Wars, 146 BC. It is unknown whether what the explorers encountered were what we now call gorillas, another species of ape or monkeys, or humans. Members of the expedition encountered "savage people, the greater part of whom were women, whose bodies were hairy, and whom our interpreters called Gorillae". 500 BC), a Carthaginian explorer on an expedition to the west African coast to the area that later became Sierra Leone. The word gorilla comes from the history of Hanno the Navigator ( c. However, conservation efforts have been successful in some areas where they live. There are many threats to their survival, such as poaching, habitat destruction, and disease, which threaten the survival of the species. Both species are classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN all subspecies are classified as Critically Endangered with the exception of the mountain gorilla, which is classified as Endangered. There are thought to be around 316,000 western gorillas in the wild, and 5,000 eastern gorillas. Lowland gorillas live in dense forests and lowland swamps and marshes as low as sea level, with western lowland gorillas living in Central West African countries and eastern lowland gorillas living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo near its border with Rwanda. The mountain gorilla inhabits the Albertine Rift montane cloud forests of the Virunga Volcanoes, ranging in altitude from 2,200 to 4,300 metres (7,200 to 14,100 ft). Although their range covers a small percentage of Sub-Saharan Africa, gorillas cover a wide range of elevations. Gorillas' natural habitats cover tropical or subtropical forest in Sub-Saharan Africa. Gorillas tend to live 35–40 years in the wild. The Eastern gorilla is distinguished from the Western by darker fur colour and some other minor morphological differences. They tend to live in troops, with the leader being called a silverback. Gorillas are the largest living primates, reaching heights between 1.25 and 1.8 metres, weights between 100 and 270 kg, and arm spans up to 2.6 metres, depending on species and sex. The DNA of gorillas is highly similar to that of humans, from 95 to 99% depending on what is included, and they are the next closest living relatives to humans after chimpanzees and bonobos. The genus Gorilla is divided into two species: the eastern gorilla and the western gorilla, and either four or five subspecies. Gorillas are herbivorous, predominantly ground-dwelling great apes that inhabit the tropical forests of equatorial Africa. |
